The College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is part of Florida’s system of educational accountability that satisfies the mandates of Section 1008.29, F.S. The CLAST is an achievement test that measures student’s attainment of the college-level communication and mathematics skills that were identified by the faculties of community colleges and state universities through the College-Level Academic Skills Project (CLASP). The skills have been adopted by the State Board of Education and are listed in Rule 6A-10.0316, FAC.

Since August 1, 1984, students in public postsecondary institutions in Florida have been required to meet the requirements of the four (4) subtests for the award of an associate in arts degree, for admission to upper-division status and the award of a baccalaureate degree in a state university in Florida. Currently, students can meet the requirements of CLASP through several methods, including taking the CLAST exam, or the alternative methods of ACT, SAT, or coursework. There are three (3) exceptions to this:

  • Students who were awarded an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from a state of Florida public institution.
  • Students seeking an undergraduate degree from a state of Florida institution that have already earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.
  • Students who were awarded an Associate of Arts degree before September 1, 1982, and were admitted to upper division status in a Florida public university before August 1, 1984.

Fully admitted UCF students seeking an associate in arts (A.A.) or baccalaureate degree and who have completed 18 credit hours are eligible to take the CLAST exam. Students may not re-take any subtest for which they already have passing scores.

The CLAST requirement should be completed by the time a student has earned 60 credit hours. Students who do not meet the CLAST requirement by the time they have reached 36 hours or more of upper division credit including earned, in progress, or registered for in future terms may be prohibited from registering until the requirement is met.

If you are seeking a degree in Education and/or if you ever plan to pursue a state teaching certificate, please contact an advisor in the College of Education in order to determine what requirements you need to meet.

Transfer students:

  • Transfer students with 60+ credit hours who have not met the CLAST requirement MUST take the CLAST exam during their first semester at UCF.
  • Transfer students who complete the CLAST requirement before transferring to UCF must verify that the CLAST requirement has been met on their UCF degree audit once all their transfer credits have been evaluated and posted.
  • CLAST also applies to students transferring to UCF from Florida private colleges and out-of-state colleges. Course work taken at non-Florida public institutions may not satisfy CLAST.
  • If a student has not met the CLAST requirement, and has in progress, registered for and/or earned 36 hours of upper division credit, enrollment in future semesters at UCF will be prohibited.

The CLAST consists of four (4) subtests: Essay, English Language Skills, Reading, and Mathematics. There are two (2) ways in which students can take the CLAST exam (1.) paper-and-pencil and (2.) computer-adaptive. The paper-and-pencil CLAST is offered once a semester: February, June, and October. It will take approximately 4-6 weeks from the date of testing to receive official CLAST scores.
