CLAST Holds

The College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is part of Florida’s system of educational accountability that satisfies the mandates of Section 1008.29, F.S. A CLAST hold will be placed on a student’s record once they have reached 36 hours or more of upper division credit. This 36 hour total includes credit that has been earned, credit that is in progress, and credit that has been registered for in future terms. Once a CLAST hold is placed, a student may not register for any additional upper division courses (3,000 – 4,000 level) until they have met the CLAST requirement, or received an approved exception, including: completing a Lower Division Registration Waiver (restricted to lower division 1,000-2,000 level courses), receiving an approved CLAST Hold Petition, or receiving an approved CLAST Waiver.

Text Box: Check the “holds” page of your “My UCF” account in order to determine if you have a CLAST hold.

Lower Division Registration Waiver

A student may request temporary removal of their CLAST hold by completing a Lower Division Registration Waiver and agreeing to register for only for lower division courses (1,000-2,000 level). If the University Testing Center (UTC) approves the student’s Lower Division Registration Waiver, it may take up to 24 hours in order for the CLAST hold to be temporarily removed for 48 hours in order to register for lower division courses. A Lower Division Registration Waiver must be obtained in person at UTC.

CLAST Hold Petition

The CLAST Hold Petition is a means by which students can petition a committee for temporary removal of their CLAST hold to allow registration into upper division courses (3,000 – 4,000 level) for the upcoming semester. Although the hold may be temporarily removed for registration purposes, the student must still meet the CLAST requirement. The CLAST Hold Petition Committee meets once per month. In order to be eligible to apply for a CLAST Hold Petition students must meet one or more of the following conditions:

  • The course requested is only offered once per year.
  • The student needs to satisfy the summer attendance requirement.
  • The student has documented learning or other disability that prevents them from passing the CLAST with the appropriate reasonable accommodations.
  • The student has a documented medical condition that has prevented them from meeting the CLAST requirement.
  • The student has documentation of consistent efforts to prepare for the CLAST and has taken the CLAST subtest(s) at the following minimum number of times:
    • Essay 3X
    • ELS 4X
    • Reading 4X
    • Math 4X
  • The student has documentation of family circumstances that have prevented them from taking or passing the CLAST.
  • The student has documentation of financial hardship or loss of scholarship funds that will occur if they are not enrolled.

The committee does not consider the following reasons as extenuating circumstances for a student to submit a petition to have a CLAST hold removed:

  • Student unaware of CLAST requirement.
  • Student unable to balance school and employment responsibilities.
  • Student has satisfied 3 out of 4 subtests of the CLAST.
  • The next test administration of the CLAST is after registration.
  • The student intends to graduate in the immediate upcoming semester.
  • Graduation would be postponed if the student does not register for classes.

If you meet one or more of the above conditions, you must contact the University Testing Center (UTC) and attend a mandatory 30-minute appointment with the CLAST Coordinator in order to obtain the CLAST Hold Petition packet. You need to allow 1-2 weeks to complete the Hold Petition Packet once you meet with the CLAST Coordinator. Appointments can be scheduled by emailing the CLAST Coordinator at izgonzal@mail.ucf.edu , by calling UTC at 407-823-5109, or by coming into UTC located in Howard Phillips Hall, room 106.
